The Creative Connections project, delivered by Youth Initiatives in Derry/Londonderry, brought together young people from Protestant and Catholic communities to participate in weekly good relations workshops over a six-month period, using film and music as creative tools to explore identity, understanding, and a shared future.
Over the course of the six months, the young people wrote, performed, directed, filmed, and produced their own original short film, “Bridges Between.” The film follows two young people from different backgrounds who are brought together reluctantly, shaped by stereotypes and assumptions they have learned about one another. At first, they resist the idea of working together, holding onto mistrust and division. However, as they spend time alongside each other, they begin to listen, challenge their own perceptions, and recognise the value of respect, understanding, and cooperation. The story reflects the journey many young people experience in divided communities and highlights how meaningful relationships can grow when individuals are willing to move beyond prejudice and choose connection over separation.
The premiere of “Bridges Between” took place on 25th March at St Pio House, where family, friends, staff, and supporters gathered to celebrate the creativity, teamwork, and personal growth of the young people involved. The event marked the culmination of months of dedication and collaboration, and provided an opportunity to showcase the powerful message of unity and hope created by the group.
